GRÁ continues to work with Mafanikio and other partner on the Mkwiro Water Project (in the coast province of Kenya, Msambweni District, Mkwiro Island Village). A desalination plant and solar panels have also been provided for the borehole.
The borehole digging and well construction project was undertaken in 2008, in partnership with Mafanikio community based organisation that runs the project on the ground. The Geologists surveyed and selected an appropriate site in January 2008, the ground surveys began and the area was prepared. Diana Chipo from Mafanikio, GRÁ’s partner, has visited the village regularly to start the process of community empowerment around this new investment.
GRA recognises the right to water and that access to water is a major concern for communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The island has a population of 1,700 people and their biggest problem is clean drinking and domestic water. In a developing country, access to safe and clean drinking water can be a life or death problem.
